Van Nuys Middle School Math/Science Magnet

Welcomes You!

Van Nuys offers a unique experience exploring mathematics and science in middle school. Ours is an integrated, multicultural and humanistic approach that emphasizes personal exploration and creative expression, along with developing critical and analytical thinking skills. Students learn about the scientific method through application and experience, the thrill of exploration, change and discovery through hands-on, activity-based learning. We are a small-sized program (approximately 200 students), with a personalized student-centered approach. We encourage your interest and value your support!

Our Vision                                                           2009 API = 864
Learning Today for Tomorrow

Our Mission
Each Student Can and Will Succeed in our College-Going Culture

What is a Middle School?
A middle school helps students make the transition between the elementary and high school experiences. Our teachers and students, as part of interdisciplinary teams, work together to create a smaller and more personalized learning environment than the traditional secondary school. The team becomes the student's home base, providing opportunities to grow, explore and create.

What is the VNMS Magnet?
Our Magnet students usually have their academics (mathematics, science, social studies, and English) within the Magnet school.  We draw on the resources of the home school to offer elective courses, for example: art, music, journalism, and drama for our students. Additionally, we have a model physical education program that is recognized statewide.  The program emphasizes fitness for life, skill building, and character development.
VNMS Magnet students are members of both an interdisciplinary team of excellent and caring teachers within their respective grade levels, as well as members of the multi-grade level Mighty Magnet Team.

Why VNMS Math/Science Magnet?

Science:
Our science program is unique. It demonstrates that in the real world all the various branches of science (for example, biology, chemistry and physics) are interdependent. Since all the sciences are related, we teach the various sciences in each grade level as they relate to a particular topic, subject or theme.

Mathematics:
Our mathematics courses emphasize the interrelationship of topics in mathematics as well as making connections with other subjects. We offer advanced courses to students who are ready to take algebra 1AB and geometry in the 7th and 8th grades.

Technology:
Technology is integrated within the Magnet program and taught throughout the curriculum, with P.C.s, Apples, digital cameras, and VCR/television monitors readily available to Magnet students. Computer instruction is also available in the Mac Lab.

Program Outline:
While our emphasis is on mathematics and science, we offer a strong English and social studies curriculum and various elective offerings necessary for developing well-rounded individuals. Our Magnet program stresses writing across curriculum to develop essential writing communication skills as well as cohesiveness within and among the various disciplines.
